Karst (Kras)

The Land of Stone, Wind & Teran Wine

Just inland from the coast lies the Karst (Kras), a unique limestone plateau that gave its name to karst landscapes worldwide. This is a region of dramatic contrasts, where the strong Burja wind sweeps across stony meadows and the iron rich red soil produces the famous, blood red Teran wine.

The Karst is a place for slow travel and culinary indulgence. It is the home of the air dried Karst Prosciutto (Pršut), the medieval stone village of Štanjel with its Ferrari Garden, and the cradle of the noble white Lipizzaner horses at Lipica. Below the surface, it hides UNESCO-listed wonders like the massive Škocjan Caves.
