Velika Planina

The Fairytale High Plateau & Herdsmen’s Heritage

Stepping onto Velika Planina feels like walking into a storybook. Accessible by cable car from the Kamnik valley, this high mountain plateau is home to one of the largest preserved herdsmen’s settlements in Europe. The landscape is dotted with unique, oval-shaped wooden huts (called bajta) covered in spruce shingles, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps.

In summer, the plateau comes alive with the sound of cowbells as herdsmen bring their cattle up to graze. It is the perfect time to taste fresh sour milk and the famous Trnič cheese (a traditional ‘love cheese’ decorated with wooden stamps). In winter, the plateau transforms into a magical snowy playground for night sledding and snowshoeing. Whether you visit the tiny Snow Mary Chapel or the Preskar Museum, Velika Planina offers a glimpse into a simpler, ancient way of life. Explore our guide to hiking, dining, and staying in these iconic wooden huts.
